Collection Money Counting at St. Theresa's

Monthly Collection Money Counting at St. Theresa

Perhaps there is no area that has more potential than service, for it is how we make our faith more than words by putting it into action.  Coming from a tradition of Mother Theresa, St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Francis of Assisi, the poor and needy of Austin should be familiar with the Catholic 20-Somethings as a force of good in the community. OUr service leaders will be our members who want to take action to do good in the world.  They will help us lead and plan projects in which we are to do good for those who need it the most.  Possible projects may include working with the homeless to provide food and clothing, visiting the sick and elderly, visiting the imprisoned through jail ministry, helping others plug into the parish as volunteers (RCIA, youth ministry, mission trips etc.).

The following are the 3 major service projects that YOU can get involved in EACH MONTH!

Mobile Loaves & Fishes
MLF is a multi-city ministry that takes volunteers to the streets to meet the homeless and hungry where they are. Every day of the year, volunteers gather at one of the 3 stations in Austin to make food and venture out to various locations to distribute meals and clothing to those in need.

On the 4th Saturday of each month, the 20 Somethings gather at the Social Ministries building of St. Louis Church. A Make Ready team of 6 prepares lots of sandwiches, drinks, and stocks the supply truck; a Truck team of up to 6 travels to one or more locations–be it local parks, public areas, or neighborhoods–to hand out goods.

What started as an idea from 9 UT-area churches is now an established food pantry that serves thousands of people. Micah 6 provides sustenance for those who are struggling to make ends meet and may not know when they will next eat. We often think of helping the homeless, but food pantries also provide important support to aid those on the brink of homelessness.

Micah 6 functions as a sort of free grocery store. MANY hands are needed to ensure that everyone in line is served. We help register new visitors, guide them through the food areas and bag groceries. Rest assured that if you come to Micah 6, you will be put to work!

Catholic Worker House
Mary House is the Austin component of a worldwide ministry called the Catholic Worker Movement. It provides a true home for the poor, the ill, and those who have no one else to turn to. Far from being a place of sadness, though, Mary House is filled with joy!

Surviving completely by donations, the house can provide for about 10-11 residents at any point in time. Some are here for a week, some a year, and some a lifetime. It is a place of peaceful community and an authentic living out of the Corporal Works of Mercy.
